NephCON 2025: A Landmark Achievement in Nephrology Education and Global Collaboration

The Sri Lanka Society of Nephrology (SLSON) successfully hosted NephCON 2025, its Annual Academic Sessions, from November 19th–22nd, 2025. The event was a grand scientific success, characterized by a wealth of shared knowledge and the participation of world-renowned leaders in the field.

Inauguration Ceremony: A Prestigious Opening

The congress was officially inaugurated on the evening of November 20th at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo.

  • Welcome Address: Dr. Vindya Gunasekara, President of SLSON, delivered the welcome speech.
  • Distinguished Guests: Chief Guest Prof. Yap Hui Kim and Guest of Honour Prof. Rukshana Shroff.
  • Honorary Oration: The Vidyajyothi Professor Rezvi Sheriff Oration was delivered by Prof. Eranga Wijewickrema.
  • Global Presence: Participation from local and international medical experts across multiple specialties.

Pre-Congress Workshops: Focused Clinical Excellence

Prior to the main sessions, high-impact workshops were held at The Tower, UCFM, focusing on practical skill-building:

  • Basics of Kidney Transplantation (Nov 19): Nearly 116 doctors and 74 nurses participated.
  • State of the Art in Kidney Transplantation (Nov 20): Attended by 35 specialized doctors.
  • Pediatric Dialysis – "Bridging the Gap in Knowledge and Practice" (Nov 20): 30 doctors and 45 nurses participated.

Main Congress Highlights

The main scientific program at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel (Nov 21–22) featured a robust exchange of ideas between local and regional delegates:

  • Academic Rigor: 7 symposia, 5 plenaries, and 60 abstract presentations.
  • Specialized Tracks: Day 1 included parallel sessions for Adult and Pediatric Nephrology; Day 2 had a common session.
  • Expert Faculty: 40 speakers (18 pre-congress and 22 main congress), including international pioneers.

International Partnerships

NephCON 2025 was a truly collaborative effort made possible through partnerships with:

  • International Society of Nephrology (ISN)
  • International Pediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA)
  • Asian Pacific Society of Nephrology (APSN)
  • Indian Society of Nephrology

Participation & Impact

With 170 participants on the first day and 65 on the second, the event served as a vital platform for professional development and the advancement of renal care in Sri Lanka.
