Dear friends and colleagues,
I am honored to assume the position of President of the Sri Lanka Society of Nephrology (SLSON) for the year 2026.
I extend my sincere gratitude to the past Presidents and Council members for their unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions, which have strengthened our Society and advanced nephrology services in Sri Lanka. I also wish to thank the newly elected Council for their commitment and enthusiasm in continuing this important work.
Our theme for the year, “Kidney Health for All: Early Action, Lasting Impact,” reflects our strong commitment to promoting early detection, timely intervention, and sustained management of kidney disease. This year, we place special emphasis on the prevention and optimal management of chronic kidney disease , particularly among patients with diabetes mellitus and hypertension , in alignment with the World Kidney Day focus in Sri Lanka.
A key priority will be to strengthen screening programs and ensuring proper follow-up of at-risk individuals. Early identification of kidney disease in patients with DM and HTN can significantly reduce disease progression and improve long-term outcomes. In this regard, we will actively promote awareness among healthcare professionals and the public on the importance of regular screening and continuity of care.
To support this initiative, SLSON will organize a series of lectures, workshops, and regional educational programs targeting medical officers. These programs will focus on enhancing knowledge and clinical skills related to early detection, risk stratification, and evidence-based management of CKD. Empowering frontline healthcare providers is essential for reducing the burden of kidney disease in our communities.
Furthermore, we strongly advocate for the prioritization and wider availability of essential medications such as empagliflozin within the government healthcare sector. Incorporating such evidence-based therapies into routine care for patients with diabetes and hypertension has the potential to significantly delay the onset and progression of CKD, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.
A key highlight of the year will be the Annual Academic Sessions of SLSON 2026, to be held from November 24th to 26th. This premier event will bring together local and international experts to share the latest advancement in Nephrology, offering valuable opportunities for learning, collaboration, and professional development.
As the leading professional body for nephrology in Sri Lanka, SLSON remains committed to advancing education, strengthening advocacy, and enhancing patient care. Through collaborative efforts, we aim to build a more proactive, preventive, and patient-centered approach to kidney health across the country.
We invite all members and stakeholders to actively participate in our initiatives throughout the year and contribute towards achieving our shared goal of better kidney health for all.
Warm regards,
Dr.Nalaka Herath.
President, Sri Lanka Society of Nephrology(SLSON)
