Membership Categories

Ordinary Member, Overseas Member, Foreign Member

To qualify as an Ordinary Member, Overseas Member, or Foreign Member, an individual must be a registered medical practitioner and meet one of the following criteria:

  • MD Degree from Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Colombo
    • Holds an MD degree in Medicine.
    • Certified as a Specialist in Nephrology.
  • Equivalent Overseas Qualification
    • Holds an overseas qualification equivalent to an MD.
    • Certified as a Specialist in Nephrology by the relevant specialist or postgraduate institute.
    • Qualification must be acceptable to the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
  • Certified Consultant Nephrologist in Sri Lanka
    • Certified as a Consultant Nephrologist or Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist.
    • Completed a training course by the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, or a recognized institution/postgraduate authority.
  • Specialist Registration in Sri Lanka
    • Registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
    • Certified as a Specialist by the Postgraduate Institute of Sri Lanka in a field related to Nephrology.
    • Listed in the Specialist Registry of the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
  • Practicing Nephrologist Before 2002
    • Physician certified as a Consultant in Sri Lanka.
    • Practiced Nephrology before 2002 when board certification programs started.
    • Responsible for training postgraduate students in Nephrology.
  • Certified Consultant Nephrologist Practicing Overseas
    • Certified as a Consultant Nephrologist in Sri Lanka.
    • Currently practicing as a Nephrologist overseas.

Trainee Member

To qualify as a Trainee Member, an individual must:

  • Be a registered medical practitioner.
  • Be registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council.
  • Be enrolled in and following a Postgraduate Training Programme in Nephrology or related kidney diseases conducted by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Sri Lanka.

Affiliate Members

To qualify as an Affiliate Member, an individual must be one of the following:

  • Board Certified Consultant in General/Internal Medicine
    • A physician with a special interest in Nephrology.
  • Practitioners in Nephrology and Dialysis
    • Dialysis nurses, renal dieticians, renal pharmacists, social workers, renal physiotherapists, and access coordinators.
    • Must have at least three years of practice in Nephrology and dialysis.
    • Possess the required certifications.
